EDUCATIONAL TOPICS

Our annual conference offers exciting learning experiences covering a variety of topics.

STATE PROGRAMS – will address family and consumer concerns as it relates to advocacy and political participation, and the impact of the closure of state hospitals on the criminal justice system.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYMPOSIUM/VETERANS– our theme focuses on Veterans with Mental Illness and the Criminal Justice System "A Growing Challenge for Families and Mental Health Advocates"
MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS– topics will include schizophrenia, depression, suicide, medication compliance, and genetics.
FAMILY– topics will focus on the role of families in recovery, changing roles of family members, re-building broken trust and suicide risk.
CHILDREN AND YOUTH– learn about veterans with mental illness and the issues they face.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS– will focus on natural and man-made disasters and strategies you can use to prepare yourself, your family members, and loved ones.
TREATMENT / THERAPY / MEDICATIONS– These workshops will present current information on suicide prevention, our ever popular Ask the Doctor sessions, in home medication management, psychiatric service dogs, exercise.
RECOVERY– There will be workshops on mental health recovery and fighting stigma.
RESEARCH– research topics this year include sessions on brain imaging and telepsychiatry.
COMMUNITY MODELS– the area of outreach in our communities is critical to education, support and advocacy. Topics include outreach on community support programs and mental health services in rural communities.

Scholarship opportunities are available for consumers and family members.

 

Continuing Education Credits

CERTIFIED ADDICTION COUNSELORS/CERTIFIED CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS PROFESSIONAL: CAC/CCDP
The Office of Education and Regional Programming, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is certified by the Pennsylvania Certification Board (PCB) to provide Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) and Certified Co-Occurring Disorders Professional (CCDP) continuing education credits.
COUNSELORS: NBCC Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is recognized by the National Board for Certified Counselors to offer continuing education for National Certified Counselors. Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic adheres to the NBCC Continuing Education Guidelines.
EDUCATORS: ACT 48 Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to offer continuing education credits under Act 48 guidelines. Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic adheres to the Act 48 Continuing Education Guidelines.
MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS: CEU Nurses and other health care professionals are awarded the designated number of Continuing Education Units (CEU). One CEU is equal to 10 contact hours.
PSYCHOLOGISTS: This program is sponsored by Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
CERTIFIED PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION PRACTITIONERS: CPRP The announced credit hours for each program can be applied to your training hours for the Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners (CPRP).
LICENSED/CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKERS, LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS, LICENSED MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPISTS: LSW/LCSW/LPC/LMFT The indicated number of clock hours of continuing education is provided through co-sponsorship of the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, a PA-approved provider of social work
continuing education in accordance with all the applicable educational and professional standards of the Council on Social Work Education. These clock hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW, LPC and LMFT renewal. For information of social work continuing education, call (412) 624-3711. HIGHLIGHTS AND ACTIVITIES

 

Thursday, October 30th
Hospitality Room: the Hospitality Room is available Thursday, Friday and Saturday to take a break and relax during the conference. Located in the State Room.
Consumer Council: The NAMI Consumer Council is formed to advance the activities and involvement of the consumer membership of NAMI at the local, state and national levels by actively participating in advocacy issues and program development.
Criminal Justice Symposium: This year NAMI Pennsylvania is again proud to include a Criminal Justice Symposium as part of our annual conference. Our theme is "Veterans with Mental Illness and the Criminal Justice System- A Growing Challenge for Families and Mental Health Advocates".
Veteran's Advisory Council: The Veteran's Advisory Council was formed to provide guidance to the NAMI Pennsylvania staff and board. This council is comprised of veterans, consumers and family members.
Friday, October 31st
Annual Dinner: NAMI Pennsylvania's Annual Business Meeting will take place after dinner on Friday. Join us for an update on the highlights of the past year, and be part of the planning for our future. The new members of the Board of Directors will be introduced. A highlight of the annual dinner will be the presentation of awards to well-deserving nominees.
Art Show: our Annual Art Show will take place on Friday and Saturday. Artists are also invited to sell their art.
Hospitality Room: the Hospitality Room is available Thursday, Friday and Saturday to take a break and relax during the conference. Located in the State Room.
Exhibit Hall: the Exhibit Hall will be open on Friday at noon. A NAMI bookstore is planned for this year, as well. Save shipping and handling costs by buying NAMI books on site.
Teachers Reception will be held from 5:30 pm-6:30 pm. (By invitation)

Saturday, November 1st
The Exhibit Hall and Artists' Exhibits will continue through Saturday afternoon, to allow individuals who can attend on Saturday only an opportunity to enjoy these conference features.

SPECIAL: CANDIDATES FORUM 1:45 pm -2:45 pm. Saturday. Additional Information to Follow. Bernard S. Arons, MD , will represent the Obama campaign.
In this Presidential election year, NAMI Pennsylvania is pleased to invite attendee's to a Candidates Forum. Candidates for office from both major political parties have been invited to participate in a forum in which they or their representatives can present positions on issues of importance to NAMI members, friends and the public. Please make plans now to attend our Candidates Forum during the conference.
Saturday Evening Celebration!! Don't miss out on this fun-filled evening. Saturday evening is shaping up to be a night filled with great food, great music, great friends, and some fund-raising thrown in, too!
Once again we will be holding a Silent Auction: a special opportunity for NAMI supporters to contribute to the organization while receiving unique items. A broad range of items to bid on are being contributed by sponsors, friends and local businesses. There will be many items for all budgets' so bring your checkbooks and your generous spirit to make this a huge success! Musical entertainment will be provided. Be ready to dance the night away!
